HUGE NEW FINANCIAL RESOURCES FOR SPORT
It is a percentage of a global business of around USD 200 billion. Athletes and clubs get nothing from this business. And this business is based on sport.
The model considers a 10% share for athletes, i.e. around USD 20 billion. The commission is 1% - USD 2 billion per year.
How many sports entities are involved in the model? Approximately 150 world football leagues - that's about 2 000 clubs. There are also minor leagues in many countries - another 5 000 clubs. In basketball it's about 1,000 clubs, in tennis it's about 4,000 players. Cricket, baseball, American football, rugby and hockey together represent about 2,000 clubs. In other sports, the numbers are lower. In total, there are about 20,000 clubs and athletes.
A successful implementation of the model will require winning the second Bosman case. This player changed decades of football business with a single judgment.
Someday, someone will implement this model. It will change the way the sport operates in addition to the huge business. It will become a lucrative business not just for the top few in their preferred sports. We can only imagine what a huge boom this would mean for many sports.
So what needs to be done? Apart from fighting a legal battle, we need to enter into contracts with athletes who will start promoting the idea in various forums. Sports clubs also need to be approached.
Can a law firm be found to fight for this lucrative business?
